Congressional republicans were so busy celebrating their American tax scam on Wednesday afternoon that they had no time to talk about children…sick children without health care coverage. While America’s ultra-rich are basking in the benefits of the GOP and Donald Trump’s latest plutocratic takeover of the country, those with the most need will be left out in the cold this holiday season.
And people think Ebenezer Scrooge and the Grinch are bad guys. Compared to Trump and every republican member of congress, even the Christmas hating offspring of Scrooge and the Grinch would be saintly. Unlike their fictional storybook examples, the Republican Party lacks the ability to discover compassion and goodwill. We’re tired of the media trying to walk the line with the Trump regime and the GOP, so we will just say it:
Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan and every member of Congress who refused to fund CHIP are a group of heartless bastards.
Last September, congress failed to refund the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Despite weak claims by GOP representatives that they had no intention of hurting America’s weakest citizens, republicans were simply too consumed and exhausted with lining their dirty pockets to take up the issue before their two-week holiday vacation. When asked about progress on funding for desperate children, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said they had decided to withhold plans for legislative funding of CHIP until after Christmas.
Meanwhile, protesters of the tax scam and proponents of CHIP were being arrested outside senate offices on Wednesday. The GOP has lost all credibility and seems to be entirely incapable of finding a moral high road during the first year of the Trump regime.
Most states that have offered CHIP to families with children are either out of money or will be out sometime during the holidays. With no provision to refund CHIP and a deadly flu-season taking hold across the nation, the GOP has cast illness and suffering upon the children instead of the usual Christmas and holiday treats.
Alabama will close CHIP enrolment on the first business day of the new year. Connecticut and Colorado will run out of funds in January and officials everywhere are discouraging parents from signing up for coverage that may not exist. The GOP’s reluctance to offer necessary and in some cases, lifesaving, resources to low-income children borders on crimes against humanity. If one child suffers or dies because of terminated coverage, the entire congress and executive branch of our government should be indicted.
Funding CHIP will cost America $75 billion over five years, but GOP leaders have complained about the amount that will be added to the nation’s deficit. However, with the passing of the Trump tax scam, America will add $1.5 trillion to the existing debt. The arguments do not add up to anything but a wanton disregard for America’s most vulnerable poor and a deliberate indifference to childhood suffering.
It’s almost as if Trump and his republican henchmen and women are so focused on creating a plutocracy that they would sacrifice poor children to eliminate an entire future generation. But that would be promoting a terrible infanticide. That only happens in Trump’s favorite places like China, where a million baby girls go ‘missing’ each year. Let’s all hope America’s 9 million CHIP recipients fare better this holiday — despite Trump and the GOP’s efforts.
